About
The Desk Free Life Manifesto
I didn’t build Desk Free Life because I wanted freedom photos, flashy cars, or a laptop-on-a-beach fantasy.
I built it because I learned - the hard way - that jobs are not security, loyalty is not protection, and no company is coming to save you.
My story (and why this exists)
I moved from the US to Ireland in 2016. I planned to stay short-term. Life had other ideas.
When it became clear I wasn’t going back, I had to start over professionally in the west of Ireland - where opportunities were limited, recruiters worked differently, and my resume didn’t translate. I applied everywhere. Even supermarkets didn’t call me back.
My ego was wrecked. I went from a six-figure salary in Boston to accepting €35,000 a year just to stay afloat. I knew I was capable of more - and I felt it every day.
The same week I started that job, I got an email from Upwork. A $25-an-hour contract. Side work. Something small.
That “something small” changed everything.
I took on clients at night. Then more clients. Some great. Some terrible. I learned quickly. I learned what I enjoyed, what I didn’t, and what I was actually good at.
Eventually, I made the leap to working fully for myself. It was terrifying - but it worked. Because when you bet on yourself, you tend to show up differently.
The lie we’re sold
We’re told that full-time jobs are safe. That loyalty pays off. That if you work hard enough, you’ll be looked after.
In October 2023, I was diagnosed with breast cancer.
I kept working. I checked in during chemotherapy. I tried to keep everything “normal,” because that’s what responsible employees do.
Six weeks before Christmas, I was laid off without warning.
That was the moment the illusion fully broke. Not because the company was cruel - but because it was a company. And companies optimize for cost, not people. Companies do not care about you the way you care about them.
That doesn’t make them evil. It makes them businesses. And it means you need options.
Why Desk Free Life exists
I built Desk Free Life for people who want control, not hustle.
- For working women who are good at their jobs but know their salary will never keep up with the cost of living - and want to do something about it.
- For parents who don’t want their kids raised by daycare for 50 hours a week just to break even.
- For single parents who don’t have the energy - or desire - for a second physical job.
- For graduates drowning in student loan debt who want breathing room.
- For people in their 40s and 50s who need income without destroying their bodies or their pride.
- For anyone who looks at a 40-year career path and thinks: "I can’t do this forever."
Desk Free Life isn’t about quitting your job tomorrow. It’s about never being trapped again.
What I believe
I believe:
- Income should be something you can influence
- Skills are more powerful than titles
- Consistency beats perfection
- Real life matters more than performative success
I don’t believe in:
- Hustle culture
- Influencer fantasies
- “Six figures in six months” nonsense
- This isn’t about being rich. It’s about being resilient.
What I believe about giving back
I believe that having control over your income and time comes with responsibility. Not to show off. Not to signal virtue. But to help where you can, when you can.
Desk Free Life isn’t about taking more - it’s about needing less so you can give more.
More time to show up for people. More flexibility to help without burning out. More means to quietly support causes that matter to you. That might look like donating to charities you believe in. Supporting people in your community. Freeing up time to volunteer. Helping family without resentment or exhaustion.
Giving back doesn’t require wealth. It requires margin. And margin only comes when you’re not constantly scrambling to survive.
I don’t care about flashy cars or status symbols. I care about being able to say yes when someone needs help. I care about being present. I care about contributing in a way that feels human and grounded.
That’s the kind of success Desk Free Life is built for.
The bigger picture
Life is short. I learned that in October 2023.
I may never reach retirement age - and I’m okay with that - because I’m living now.
I go to appointments without asking permission. I work around my life, not the other way around. I choose clients I enjoy. I control my time.
That is success to me. Not luxury. Not status. Not things.
Agency. Dignity. Choice.
The Desk Free Life promise
- This brand exists to help you:
- Stop waiting for permission
- Build income you can control
- Create options before you need them
- Work in a way that respects your life
Perfect is the enemy of progress. Starting messy is better than staying stuck.
Desk Free Life is not about escaping work. It’s about escaping powerlessness. Because real success isn’t what you accumulate - it’s what you’re able to give without losing yourself.
And once you feel that shift - you’ll never unsee it.
